New Article

I have a new article up at theooze.com for those interested. It is on domestic violence, so not exactly happy reading. I think I need my next article to be about the happier sides of life...but for those interested in DV, here it is.

I didn't exactly get rave reviews on the last article I wrote for them (one reader pretty much condemned me to hell), so things can only get better, right? Here goes....

In my denomination, we have at least one Sunday per year which focuses 100% on women. Normally, we have a woman from our denomination write one sermon, and it is sent out to every church for one of our congregations woman elders to read.

Perhaps you might give some thought to writing a sermon on domestic violence to be read by others, so that this message which you care about so passionately will be actually preached in churches.

I know once I recieve a congregation as more than a student pastor, I would love to have a sermon on this subject, but would feel uncomfortable giving it, as my gender is so often the problem. Perhaps it would be interesting then to have a male's voice enter the next week with how men can work to do justice to this issue.

Just a thought.

Just read your article on The Ooze...looks like you're getting much better response to this article than the last! Finally, they're seeing the light...:) Great article--thanks for the important work you are doing.

Matt,
Thanks for your thoughts on this. I have never seen myself as a writer of sermons, but you have planted a good seed of thought! Perhaps I will think about doing that...I think it's a good idea for me to ponder.

While I hear what you are saying about the position of speaking out on these things as a man (and I appreciate your awareness and sensitivity), I love your idea of bringing in a woman to speak and following it up with a man's voice entering the conversation. Really, partnership around this issue–both men's and women's voices– are so needed.

When will you be done with your training? I am excited for the congregation you will one day have, and how you will bring such topics to them. Your voice as a man is so needed, because you can be a lived picture of redemption for women who have known abuse.
